Tucson officially launched a new era of transportation on July 25th with the start of Sun Link streetcar passenger service. It’s a day that many of us have worked hard toward for over a decade and we were pretty excited about it! We hope that you were able to be a part of this historic celebration. The event began with a whistle-stop ride from the Westside Mercado District to University Medical Center, then headed back with stops at the University of Arizona, Main Gate Square, and Fourth Avenue for celebratory ribbon cuttings before the Streetcar arrived downtown at Fifth and Congress for the official dedication.
Following the program, Sun Link offered everyone free rides for three days along the route and boy did Tucson turn out! It is estimated that as many as 60,000 people rode the Streetcar over the first three days!
People of all ages came out to ride!
All of the districts along the route offered festivities and entertainment to celebrate this historic event!
As part of the weekend celebration, Friends of the Tucson Streetcar gave away a number of commemorative keepsakes–water bottles, visors, and other assorted items, including Sun Go cards preloaded with a day pass. But if you want to make sure that you have one of the most unique souvenirs celebrating the Streetcar’s inaugural ride, you can order a special streetcar cachet from the Postal History Foundation, For the 25 July 2014 inaugural Sun Link trip, the Foundation is offering two cachet designs, by Don Regole and Steve Farley, and two postmarks designed by Don Regole (one postmark for each inaugural trip direction). Steve Farley, also an Arizona state senator, carried the cachets in the Foundation’s authentic railway mail bag. You may order the cachets in person or by clicking here.
